England will have two boxers going for gold in Liverpool tomorrow, as Emily Asquith and Teagn Stott sealed their spots in the finals with superb semi-final victories at the M&S Bank Arena on day ten.

Bridlington’s Asquith, part of the England Boxing Performance Programme, impressed once again as she outdid India’s Pooja Rani in the light heavyweight division. The Sheffield Boxing Club boxer, who balances her training with study and work, showed composure and class to book her place in the final.

Reflecting on her win, she said: “This is surreal, I can’t wrap my head around it. This time, last year I was injured, I didn’t punch for 18 months, so within a year I’ve turned it around – I’m in the World Championships final. I can barely wrap my head around it.”

Teammate, Stott made history in the cruiserweight category, defeating Ukraine’s Danylo Zhasan to become only the fifth English male boxer to reach a World Championship final. He now stands alongside Anthony Joshua, Pat McCormack, Luke Campbell and Frankie Gavin, with Gavin the only one so far to go on and claim world gold.

Elsewhere, there was disappointment for England’s other semi-finalists. Odel Kamara and Chantelle Reid – both battled hard in their light-middleweight contests but were edged out on narrow split decisions by Kazakh opponents. Callum Makin had also bowed out in the middleweight semi-finals a day earlier.

All three return home with well-earned bronze medals, adding to England’s growing medal tally at the championships.

England’s campaign in Liverpool has already secured a five-medal haul, with the last pieces of the puzzle set to be decided in tomorrow’s double session of finals, beginning at midday and resuming in the evening at 6pm.
