A Tribute to Geoff Cannell Snr
February 24, 2026 | by Chris Boyd
England Boxing is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Geoff Cannell Snr, who died peacefully at his home on Thursday, 19th February.
Born in Liverpool, Geoff joined the Army at 18 and was based in Folkestone, where he first discovered his love for boxing. After leaving the Army, he boxed for Dover Boxing Club before going on to make a lasting impact on the sport in the local community.
In the 1970s, Geoff and a colleague founded Folkestone Boxing Club, where he coached with passion and dedication. He later became an official – a role he embraced wholeheartedly and continued in until the age of 82.
Over more than six decades in the sport, Geoff refereed at numerous international events and officiated at ABA finals, which were among the many highlights of his distinguished career. He was also a committed member of both the Kent and Southern Counties Executive Committees, contributing tirelessly to the development of amateur boxing in the region.
In his later years, Geoff lived with Parkinson’s, yet his dedication to boxing never wavered. His love for the sport and his commitment to those within it remained as strong as ever.
As a mentor, Geoff guided and supported countless officials – including his son, Geoff – and was widely respected for his fairness, high standards, and unwavering passion for amateur boxing.
Geoff leaves behind a remarkable legacy and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Rest in peace, Geoff Snr.
