England Boxing is saddened to hear of the passing of Harry Scott, a Swindon boxing legend, whose profound impact on the sport and his community will never be forgotten.
Harry passed away at the age of 86 on Sunday, April 20, at Great Western Hospital following an illness. A devoted member of the Walcot Boxing Club, Harry dedicated more than four decades of his life to coaching, with over 30 years spent as head coach. His influence went far beyond the ring.
He was best known for training Jamie Cox, Commonwealth Games gold medallist in 2006, Harry’s legacy includes countless lives he touched and redirected through the discipline and structure of boxing. Working closely with social services, he gave young people hope, purpose, and a pathway away from the streets.
His son Harold, now chairman of Walcott Boxing Club, shared stories that underline Harry’s character, a principled man, committed to community, and a firm believer in humility and respect. In one memorable moment, Harry taught Harold an early lesson in humility by matching him with a local champion when he thought he was invincible, this left a lasting impression.
Harry was not only a coach but a father figure, mentor, and rolemodel of positive influence for generations of boxers in Swindon and beyond. His love for boxing was matched only by his love for people. He didn’t just build boxers, he built futures.
As the boxing community reflects on his incredible service to the sport, England Boxing offers its deepest condolences to Harry’s family, friends, and all those whose lives he shaped. His legacy lives on.
Rest in Peace.
