England’s Gemma Richardson saw off Ireland’s Ellie Gartland with a degree of comfort in what was the Three Lions’ only bout on day four at the European Under 22 Championships in Roseto, Italy.

The Scunthorpe Boxing Club lightweight (Under 60kg) – who claimed European gold at Under 18 level in 2019 – was the last member of the squad to get their campaign underway against a plucky southpaw opponent.

But she was quickly into her stride to claim a unanimous points victory where all five judges agreed that she won every round.

As ever, Richardson looked to make an early impression and came out aggressively, having the better of the exchanges in the first round, even though both boxers had a point deducted.

The GB squad member forced a standing eight count in the second round to further exert her authority and, as the two boxers again gave up points to the referee in the third, she saw out the bout with ease in the final three minutes.

After the deductions were taken into account, three judges scored the bout 28-25 and two 28-24.
