Gemma Richardson claimed a final berth at the European Under 22 Championships after a split decision victory over Russia’s Nune Asatrain.

Just as was the case in her win in the quarter-finals, the Scunthorpe boxer traded deducted points with her opponent, who was the tournament number one seed.

But, crucially, the lightweight (Under 60kg) contender won the second round on all five judges’ scorecards, which proved vital in the final outcome after splits on the first and third rounds.

However, it was not to be for England’s only other semi-final contender as Harris Akbar was beaten by another Russian in the shape of Ivan Stupin.

The Welterweight (Under 69 kg) dropped the first round on four of the five judges’ scorecards, but came back strongly in the second, leaving the contest even on three counts.

However, it was not to be in the third round as the Bradford Police boxer lost out by a 4-1 verdict to go down to a unanimous decision, meaning he will claim a bronze medal.
