Billingham Boxing Academy are celebrating after winning a prestigious national award for their community work.

The Tyne, Tees and Wear club were named Community Club of the Year at the Sport and Recreation Alliance’s Community Sport and Recreation Awards 2022, held yesterday (Thursday 24th March).

Beating off competition from LDM Basketball (Let’s Do More CIC) and Rule Ahead Together, the award was presented to the club’s Matthew Williams and national champion Harley Carberry by HRH Prince Edward.

Billingham’s success came as a result of the significant amount of work they do in their local community, including a Knockout Depression programme, All Stars sessions for children and young people with SEND, additional needs, and anyone who needs a bit of extra support, Parkinson’s Punchers sessions, and Golden Gloves sessions (over 40s).

“We are absolutely thrilled to win this award and to be recognised for all of the work that we do in our community,” said Billingham’s Lisa Worth.

“We have a fantastic team who are extremely passionate about making a difference not only in the lives of our boxers, but in our community too.

“Boxing is a fantastic sport that has the ability to reach so many different people from so many different walks of life, whether it be a boxer competing at the highest level in the sport or adapting a non-contact boxing session for a child or young person with additional needs.”

England Boxing would like to congratulate Billingham on their award success.
