All three of Team England’s boxers competing on the opening day of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games won their bouts, putting each of them through to the next respective rounds.

Kerry Davis overcame a spirited Ornella Sathoud of Ghana to take the victory in her under 75kg bout by a 4-0 split decision.

Davis landed some great shots and matched her opponent for pace come the second round. She kept her distance well and put in a strong performance to book her place in the last eight.

Lewis Richardson knocked down his opponent, Harris Khan, in the first round of his under 75kg contest and showed consistency on the way to a unanimous points decision victory over the Welshman.

Joe Tyers boxed “the perfect contest”, using his speed, accuracy and boxing IQ to beat the two-time national champion of Sri Lanka, Sanjeewa Bandara Rajakaruna Rajakar, by another unanimous decision. He’s now through to the last sixteen of the under 63kg category.
