Euro Under-22 Champs 2022: Croft brothers and Hickey add to medal tally

It was another excellent day for the Home Nations on day seven of the European Under-22 Chamipionships as British boxers secured three more medals.

After England’s Sameenah Toussaint and Olivia Holmes guaranteed themselves a bronze medal on day six, Welsh brothers Ioan and Gran Croft and Sam Hickey of Scotland did likewise on men’s quarter-finals day in Porec, Croatia.

Ioan Croft (at 67kg) beat Barry O’Connor of Ireland before Garan Croft (at Under 71kg) repeated the trick against Istvan Gerzsenyl of Hungary.

Hickey made it a hat-trick of GB unanimous verdicts as he defeated Yusuf Ozdemir of Tukey at Under 75kg.

However, there was disappointment for Scotland’s other representative, Lennon Mulligan, dropped a very close 3-2 split decision to Mehmethan Cinar or Turkey at Under 51kg.

Today, five British boxers are in action at the semi-final, medal stages.

First, English duo Holmes (Under 54kg) boxes against Ireland’s Niamh Faye (Ring B, bout 4, 1.45pm UK time) then Toussaint (Under 57kg) takes on Italy’s Biancamaria Tessari (Ring A, bout 5, 2pm UK time.

In the evening session, Ioan Croft (Wales, Under 67kg) faces Giacomo Michaeli of Italy (Ring A, bout 7, 6.30pm UK time) before Garan Croft (Wales, Under 71kg) comes up against Noa Jezek of Croatia (Ring B, bout 8, 6.45pm UK time) and Sam Hickey (Scotland, Under 75kg) goes head to head with Croati’s Gabrijel Veocic (Ring A, bout 9, 7pm UK time).
