England’s boxers made an excellent start at the inaugural World Boxing Championships in Liverpool, securing three victories from four bouts on Day One at the M&S Bank Arena.
The event is the largest ever Olympic-style boxing competition staged in Great Britain, featuring 17 Paris 2024 medallists and more than 30 Olympians.
Ellis Trowbridge (Surbiton ABC) opened England’s campaign at Under 55kg against Albania’s Ardit Murja. Both men looked sharp early, but spurred on by the home crowd, Trowbridge grew in confidence, landing repeated backhands and controlling the contest. He cruised to a unanimous decision victory.
Next up was Lauren Mackie (Burton Park ABC) in an Under 54kg bout with Wanqi Cao of China. Mackie applied pressure from the outset, mixing body and head shots while keeping her distance well. Her speed and accuracy earned her a 4-1 split decision win, doubling England’s tally.
Chantelle Reid (Kode Red ABC) then stepped into the ring for her first bout since the Paris 2024 Olympics, meeting Adele Henderson of New Zealand at Under 70kg. After a measured start, Reid took control with her jab and hand speed, landing scoring shots as Henderson pressed forward. Reid sealed a confident, unanimous decision victory.
The final English bout saw Isaac Okoh face Kazakhstan’s Sagyndyk Togambay at Under 90kg. In an action-packed contest, both boxers landed eye-catching shots and thrilled the crowd. Despite a strong effort from Okoh, Togambay took a narrow 3-2 split decision.
Five English boxers are in action on Day Two, including England Performance’s Reece Readshaw.
