Braunstone Golden Gloves visited by High Sheriff of Leicester
June 28, 2023 | by Chris Boyd
Braunstone Golden Gloves received an official visit recently, in the form of the High Sheriff of Leicester, Henrietta Chubb JP.
The High Sheriff’s visit was brought about after Braunstone Golden Gloves boxer, Mason Crewe (pictured below), received a youth achievement award for turning his life around.
Henrietta decided to visit the club so she could see first-hand the work coaches do for young people, her decision was based upon Mason explaining, at the awards ceremony, that his turnaround in life was entirely down to boxing.
The High Sheriff was joined by BBC Radio Leicester and the local newspaper Braunstone Alert at the boxing gym in Braunstone Town, Leicestershire.
Throughout the visit, the High Sheriff interacted with club members and spoke about topics affecting them, including loneliness, depression, sleeping, discipline, anxiety, ADHD as well as the confidence and self-worth that boxing had instilled in them.
Speaking on her website, the High Sheriff said: “I was deeply impressed by the commitment of the volunteers and the immense impact of the club on so many young lives in the area.
“The club welcomes everyone into their family and trains them to be the best they can be.
“Despite being in an area and relying entirely on fundraising and grants, it [Braunstone GG] has produced Team GB boxers who also rely on, and need, sponsorship for equipment and to enable them to enter and travel to tournaments.
“Thank you to Chris Walsh and Clare Lynch who have put their lives into this club. You are incredibly special people, thank you for your service and dedication.
“It was a pleasure to speak to the club members who are charming and great fun, thank you to all for making me feel so welcome.
“It was my honour to learn about your club and share the evening with you all.”
High Sheriffs are a single-year Royal Appointment. They represent the sovereign in their counties in upholding all matters relating to the Judiciary and maintaining law and order. They are also required to attend Royal visits to their county.
