Women’s Coach Development Programme Spotlight: Alys Ball
February 5, 2025 | by Chris Boyd
Alys Ball, of Northumberland Fire and Rescue, got into boxing as an 8-year-old to spend more time with her dad. Now a Level One coach and EB apprentice, Alys hopes to build her confidence and independence.
How did you first get involved in boxing?
I started boxing with my dad when I was 8 years old. We have a large family so spending time with each other individually can be difficult, so when my dad asked if I would join in with boxing, I just thought that meant I would be able to spend time with him doing something he enjoyed.
Once I started, I enjoyed it myself and I carried on going and I’ve now been involved in boxing for 11 years. I started volunteering and helping alongside coaches from NFRS at the age of 15. Then, once I turned 17, I took my level one coaching course and now I’ve been an England Boxing Level One coach for 3 years with Northumberland Fire and Rescue Boxing Academy.
How pleased are you to be involved in a programme that is actively bidding to push women’s and girls’ boxing forward?
I feel proud to be part of a course that is making myself, and other women, more comfortable and confident in what can feel like a male-dominated sport.
This amazing opportunity has grown the awareness around women in boxing, and it is not only for us but it’s for all of the women and girls that walk into our gyms.
What do you hope to get out of the WCDP that can improve you as a coach?
I hope to improve my confidence and belief in myself as a coach.
How much will attending the WCDP help you in your club environment?
This programme will help my club as it’ll give me more confidence to take sessions alone, and it will also boost my experience outside the club setting, such as taking boxers to shows or championships. I’ve also been able to pick up little pieces of knowledge from fellow coaches.
Who are your biggest boxing inspirations?
My biggest inspiration is my dad. He has pushed me and given me every opportunity to excel in everything I do as a boxer and now, as a coach.
