England’s boxers enjoyed another successful day at the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool, claiming five victories on Day Two at the M&S Bank Arena.
Leading the way was Performance squad boxer Reece Readshaw (Phil Thomas ABC), who dug deep to secure a split-decision victory in a back-and-forth battle against Italy’s Salvatore Attrattivo in the Male Under 50kg category.
The Italian came out aggressively in the opening round, forcing Readshaw onto the back foot and taking an early lead. But the Middlesbrough boxer responded superbly in the second, maintaining his distance and using Attrattivo’s pressure against him to land clean, eye-catching shots.
With the contest finely poised, Readshaw boxed cleverly in the final round, picking out sharp straight punches and showcasing his hand speed. His composed finish impressed the judges and earned him a well-deserved win, getting the Performance contingent off to a flying start.
There was plenty of support for local boxer Callum Makin (Rotunda ABC), who faced Croatia’s Peter Knezevic in the Male Under 75kg category. Spurred on by family and friends, Makin controlled the bout from the outset, proving too fast and too strong for his opponent as he stormed to a unanimous decision victory.
Earlier in the session, Elise Glynn overcame Slovakia’s Bibiana Lovasova in the Female Under 57kg category. Both boxers looked to find their rhythm in a cagey opening, but Glynn grew stronger as the bout went on, stepping in to land scoring shots and finishing in control to claim a split-decision win.
At Female Under 65kg, Sacha Hickey (Fisher ABC) met USA’s Morelle McCann in a scrappy contest with plenty of clinches. Hickey eventually broke through, landing a sharp right uppercut and a strong left backhand that turned the tide. That clean work was enough to secure a 4-1 split-decision victory.
The final English boxer in action was Damar Thomas (Powerday Hooks), who took on Kyrgyzstan’s Myrzakir Koshaliev in the Over 90kg category. Thomas set the tone early with a slick short uppercut and showcased his speed and footwork throughout. Keeping his opponent at range, he boxed with confidence to seal a unanimous decision win.
With five more wins on the board, England carry momentum into Day Three, when six boxers – including Performance athletes Mary Kate Smith and Grace Buckle – will take to the ring.
