Just 48 hours after clinching the National Amateur Championships (NAC) title at 48kg, Rainham’s Billy Macey was already back at the Spotlight Centre in London, lacing up his gloves, stepping into training and motivating the next generation of aspiring boxers on the DiSE (Diploma in Sporting Excellence) programme.
The young talent’s commitment and work ethic didn’t go unnoticed by his peers or coaches.
“Every single boxer, coach, and member of support staff on the DiSE programme in London – and I’m sure beyond – is absolutely overjoyed for Billy,” said Mark Collings, Head Coach of the London DiSE programme. “It couldn’t happen to a nicer lad. He works like a trojan to get these results. It’s tremendous for Billy and his family, but also for everyone involved in the programme. It shows them what is possible.”
Billy’s success has not only earned him personal accolades, but also inspired others within the DiSE community. Chris Taylor, a fellow DiSE student and member of Banbury Boxing Club, reflected on the impact of training alongside him.
“My brother Johnny and I have been on the DiSE programme since September, and it’s boys like Billy who are a genuine inspiration,” said Chris. “I reached the final of the Youth Championships this year and Johnny got to the semi-finals. I think being part of DiSE and training with elite boxers like Billy has really helped us progress.”
Since its launch 15 years ago, the DiSE programme at Spotlight has produced a string of standout performers, but the last few years have seen a particular surge in success.
“We’ve had some fantastic talent over the years,” added Collings. “But over the past four or five, we’ve seen boxers go straight from DiSE to winning senior elite titles. Billy Adams, Viv Parsons, Fred Pullen and now Billy Macey have all shown what’s possible. They come from outstanding clubs, but the DiSE scheme helps provide the polish. One thing is certain: it really lifts the level for everyone on the programme when they see what’s achievable.”
Billy Macey’s victory is the latest testament to the power of the DiSE programme in developing well-rounded, high-performing athletes, not just in the ring but as role models too.
