London DiSE students, based at the Spotlight Centre, have returned from another hugely enjoyable and successful warm-weather training week in Portugal.

Hosted by the Algarve Boxing Academy, boxers on the DiSE programme made the most of the excellent facilities and the hot climate to prepare for the upcoming competition season.

The Diploma in Sporting Excellence (DiSE) is a two-year programme supported and recognised by England Boxing. It combines full-time boxing training with academic studies, allowing aspiring boxers aged 16 to 19 to pursue sporting excellence alongside their education.

The programme is delivered by highly qualified and experienced England Boxing coaches and is part of the long-term athlete development pathway, aiming to provide talented young boxers with the opportunity to fulfil their potential and progress into future England international boxers.

“These are invaluable experiences for all concerned,” said DiSE London coach Mark Collings.

“To be able to train twice a day, recover in the pool, in a beautiful climate and have the whole experience of training abroad is something the boxers on the programme will never forget.”

Patrick Wilson’s Charlie O’Neill echoed that sentiment: “It was a real privilege to train out here with the group.

“We’ve been running on the beach and around the marina each morning and sparring three times a week and we had the pleasure of meeting ex-GB boxer and former world champion, Charlie Edwards, who trains and lives over here.

“Charlie came in and gave us some great words of wisdom and tips on how to succeed so all in all it was a fantastic trip and great preparation for what lies ahead this season.”

Limehouse boxer and DiSE student, Johnny Taylor, agreed saying: “It’s been a phenomenal trip. We’ve learned so much and just to have the weather and the time to train twice each day has been a great privilege. Thanks to everyone at DiSE and all at the Algarve Boxing Academy for organising such a great trip.”

The DiSE programme is designed for boxers who have the realistic potential to achieve excellence in boxing and are keen to continue their education at the same time. It allows elite and aspiring boxers aged 16 to 19 to train full-time in boxing while gaining qualifications that can benefit them outside of the ring.
