Doctors

England Boxing Doctors play a crucial role in amateur boxing, our Doctors form an integral part of our officiating team to ensure that our amateur boxers can participate in the sport safely.

Whether you would like to be an England Boxing Doctor to complete BCR1 assessments or support ringside at local competitions or national events, there is a range of opportunities where you can put your knowledge and passion to use.

Becoming an England Boxing Doctor is a rewarding role in providing medical services at all levels of boxing

There are four phases involved in the medical care of a competing amateur boxer:

All amateur boxers that wish to spar or compete must undergo a medical screening to assess if they are medically fit to undertake training and competition which is essential for the safe
conduct of the sport. This is know as a Boxer Competition Record Book (Digital BCR1) and must be renewed annually by an England Boxing Doctor for a Boxer to remain “Fit to Box”.

Pre bout medicals are performed by an England Boxing Doctor at local or national events before a boxer is due to compete. These medicals are to ensure that there are no changes to a boxers medical health since the initial BCR1 and that no injuries have occurred from sparring or training during that time.

An England Boxing Doctor must be present at ringside whilst boxing is in progress.

The duties of the Ringside Doctor are:

  • To understand and agree the event emergency medical action plan* in coordination with
    the Supervisor
  • To conduct Pre-Bout Medicals in accordance with guidance by England Boxing Medical
    Sub Committee direction.
  • To assess any injuries to Boxers during a contest to determine if a Boxer is fit to
    continue.
  • T0 prescribe appropriate Medical Suspensions for Boxers when required and update the
    Boxers’ Digital BCR1 accordingly. – – –
  • To conduct post bout medicals on all Boxers and record the findings on the Locker.
  • To treat injured Boxers as required.
  • To ensure resuscitation equipment is Ringside prior to boxing commencing. If the
Ringside Physician is not competent in the use of the resuscitation equipment or
unwilling to use the resuscitation equipment, a paramedic must be in attendance. All
paramedics must be registered with the Health Care Professions Council and produce
their registration number as proof or qualification.

These medicals are to assess if the boxer is fit and well proceeding the bout and to ascertain if any injuries have been caused to a boxer during the contest and treat if required, prescribe any appropriate Medical Suspensions if needed and update the Boxers’ Digital BCR1 accordingly.
