Moves Different: May Round-Up

May was another action-packed month for the Moves Different team, with activity taking place across Yorkshire, the Midlands and London as the programme continues to connect with young people, strengthen partnerships and showcase the positive impact amateur boxing can have within communities.

Unity Boxing Home Show, South Yorkshire
Moves Different teamed up with Unity Boxing for their Home Show to welcome referral partners and participants along to experience amateur boxing and learn more about the programme’s successes. The event celebrated the club’s achievements so far and provided an opportunity to share future plans while showcasing the positive impact being made through the project.

Military College Presentation and Taster Session, South Yorkshire
Yorkshire Lead, Holly Boden and Apprentice, Dominic Chesterton, introduced Moves Different to students at a local military college through a presentation and practical taster session. The visit generated strong engagement, resulted in several referrals and has already has led to plans for a follow-up session with the next student intake in September.

Aspire Medical Clinic, Yorkshire
Young people on the programme attended Aspire Boxing Club’s medical clinic, where they gained an insight into the competitive side of amateur boxing. The experience helped them understand the sport’s commitment to safety while learning more about their own health and fitness too.

Supported Accommodation Network Event, Leicester
East Midlands Lead, Michelle Butler, attended a Supported Accommodation Network event in Leicester, promoting Moves Different to organisations supporting young people moving from care into independent living. The event created valuable new connections and opened up opportunities for future referrals.

All Saints Youth Project, Kings Heath
Michelle and Apprentice, Daniel Tierney, delivered a boxing taster session at the All Saints Youth Hub in Birmingham, introducing local young people to Moves Different. The visit helped raise awareness of the programme and strengthen links with local youth workers and community groups.

Utilita Hub Community Takeover, Leicester
Moves Different attended the Utilita Hub Community Takeover in Leicester during half-term, running a stand and taster activities for local families. The event helped increase awareness of the programme and encouraged conversations with potential participants and their parents.

Community Day at Akerman Medical Practice, Lambeth
In South London, London Lead, Kirsty Woodcock and Apprentice, Allen Kabanda, had a stall at a community event hosted at Akerman Medical Practice in Lambeth.

The event brought together healthcare professionals, community organisations, parents and young people, creating an ideal environment to discuss how Moves Different can support local communities. Allen also gave several young people the opportunity to try boxing activities on the pads, helping to spark interest in the programme.

The engagement has already resulted in new referrals, while ongoing conversations with organisers are opening up opportunities for future collaboration.

Clapham Park Project Youth Council Taster, London
Kirsty and Allen also delivered a boxing taster session for members of the Clapham Park Project Youth Council. The session introduced young people to boxing, raised awareness of Moves Different and established a new community connection for future partnership work.
