This year’s EUBC European Junior Boxing Championships will be held in Galati, Romania between 23rd May and 2nd June, it has been announced.

Last October’s tournament in Russia saw England enjoy an excellent return of medals, claiming a record 12 (four gold, three silver, five bronze) from 19 boxers who competed.

Performance Coach Mick Driscoll says the team will once again be ‘aiming high’ and targeting finish in the top three of countries in the medal table.

“We won 38 medals in six major tournaments last year so it’s going to be hard to beat that this year given there are only three major tournaments, but we want to maintain our position as one of the most-respected amateur boxing nations in the world,” he said.

“We would hope to take a team of 20 this year, so if we could achieve a 50-50 split, with half of those taking home medals, then that would be a very good result, but the main thing would be to finish as one of the top three nations.

“Without question, it’s going to be very difficult to pick the boxers who will represent England, but that’s what we want. We don’t want easy decisions.

“The development programme and Talent Development Camps we now have in place means that it’s become an increasingly competitive process to earn selection, which helps to drive up the standard of our performances.”
